Which red light panel should you choose for the lower back?

Cell Glow recommends: For the lower back, prioritise coverage: a medium or large Cell Glow panel is more practical than a small light spot when you want to illuminate the whole area in one session. The right size depends on your position and distance, not on a promise to cure back pain.

What should you consider when choosing the size?

Measure the area you want to easily illuminate. A larger panel requires less moving; a compact model is easier to store. Also pay attention to a stable stand, ventilation, a clear timer and the distance specified by the manufacturer. Only a high number of LEDs says little about the dose that actually reaches the skin.

Red, near-infrared or both?

Red light is visible; near infrared light does not. Near infrared is often chosen for deeper target tissue, but tissue scatters and absorbs light. A specification of 850 nm therefore does not guarantee that a certain dose reaches the deep back muscles. Ask for reliable measurements at the distance at which you use the panel.

Is this appropriate for back care?

Research on non-specific low back pain does not currently support photobiomodulation as an independent treatment. Therefore, start with the cause of the pain and discuss exercise and treatment with a healthcare provider. You then judge a device on ease of use and transparent specifications, not on promises of healing.
